It’s going to be very hard for a startup to compete with Googles indexing and search. They are so far ahead and doing a good job delivering results. Bing is pretty crappy compared to Google and they should have money to compete.

Don’t be sure that Google will use the patents… They perhaps just bought that patents to ensure that no one else will try to keep up with Cuil’s strategy.
